Did he think me stupid? “Can’t do that, Prince Daro.”
“That’s the rule, take it or sleep in one of the rooms outside of this one.”
There was one thing Prince Daro failed to know. Secret passageways.
“Glad you see it my way, Sire Charles.”
I hefted my go bag over my shoulder and locked eyes with him. “What is the schedule for the rest of the day?”
“I’m going to be in my room for the rest of the day. Take the downtime to settle in.”
Whatever he wished. I entered the stale brown door on the right of the massive double doors, dropping my bag beside the door. I used the small opening from my failure to shut the door to listen and watch what the Prince was up to.
Moments passed as Prince Daro stood intently staring around the hallway. It appeared as if he waited for something to jump out at him. Prince Daro glanced at his wrist several times, shaking his head. His mouth moved, but whatever he said was spoken so low that only someone in front of him would pick it up. Even his lips moved so muffled it muddled my ability to read his lips.
Prince Daro glanced around the area again, pausing on the doorway. My breath caught in my throat, and I went still, ensuring no part of my body touched any part of the door or wall. Noise would give me away, and something was developing. I was sure of it. As long as I kept watching, I’d discover a major part of Prince Daro’s reasoning for pushing the fact I be loyal to him and I not enter his room at night. Just as my lungs began to burn, a creaking from the other side of the hallway drew Prince Daro’s attention.
The picture of a long, black, braided-haired woman in a light purple gown that flowed around her hips down to the ground opened. Unknown Woman Passage. It led to many areas of the staff areas of the house. Most of the highly praised staff lacks konwledge of the passage. There were many twists and turns throughout the main part of the small tunnel. Most of which I’ve explored as a child, but there were at least ten that were locked. At the time, I held no skills in lock picking. By the time I gained the skill set, I lost interest in figuring out what was behind those doors. The others only led to other secret passages that took one to another area of the castle. “Where have you been?” Prince Daro snapped. “You are late. It is dangerous for me to be standing out here waiting on your ass, Sire Jaze.”
