Chapter 10 – Charles
There was no way there could be no ploy against Lord Zarus, per se. There either was or wasn’t. What game was Prince Daro playing at? He had about two seconds to begin speaking, or my fingers would hit speed dial to Lord Zarus’s main guard.
“One . . .”
“I am trying to return this Realm back to the state it used to be.”
What? Had I heard him correctly? There is noway that could —
“Why are you shaking your head, Sire Charles? Do you not think I can?”
No. No one could. Lord Thadus would never go for it. Lord Zarus broke his heart. The two despised each other, and the realms are at odds. Lord Thadus has had no children who would consider going against their father’s wishes like Pricne Daro was.
“Lord Thadus will never go for —” Warm fingers brushed down the edge of my cheeks, cutting off my words. What Prince Daro said next stole anything else from me that might have made sense.
“You, my dear, are beautiful and sexy. I can tell you have suffered a great deal from what my father and Thadus have done. I have firsthand knowledge that Thadus wishes to reopen the portals.”
I toed the scum laying at my feet, wondering what the two were up to. If they were supposed to be on Prince Daro’s side, then why were they breaking into his room? If they were going after Lord Zarus, why not do so directly? If Prince Daro was working with Lord Thadus . . .
“How did Lord Thadus reach out to you?”
“He did not.”
The brightness in the Prince’s eyes revved my libido up, but the way he kept touching the side of my face warmed me through and through, making me want to believe him. Question was, did I, or was it the emotions he stirred in me? As long as he continued to touch me, I would never know, so I stepped out of his reach, shaking my head.
“Then how do you have this knowledge?”
“Lord Thadus,” Prince Daro went to move closer to me, stepping over the two men laying motionless on his bedroom floor. “has taken up a relationship with a Fairy. He is a good friend of mine. When he is drunk, he talks too much.”
“Lord Thadus knows this?” He’d be pissed if he did. He might kill the Fae for spilling such secrets. Lord Thadus wasn’t keen on his secrets being spilled to the commoners. Not that a Prince was a commoner, but the Prince of Lord Zarus would be considered an enemy.
“Thadus knows. You can bet he was none too pleased with his lover.”
“Did he know who he spilled them to?”
The small tilt of his head and the wide eyes told me all I needed to know. I jerked the Prince around me. Kicked the closest guy in the ribs while jerking the one Prince Daro addressed as Sire Jazz up by his shirt collar.
“Which one of you works for Lord Thadus?”
“Baby,” a warm hand rested on my shoulder, but I shook it off. “none of my guys work for anyone other than me.”
“I’m not your baby.” Wouldn’t mind being, but that was for another discussion, apparently. “Lord Thadus would view you as a threat, even if you did not know such a secret. He despises your father on principle alone, which makes you dangerous to him.”
“Sire Charles,” a squeeze to my shoulder as my boot landed on the prone guy’s hip made me look over my shoulder into a beautiful smile. “Stop. I will deal with them in a minute. They are going nowhere.”
I dropped the one who thought he was a Sire across the prone and groaning body and said, “Stay there, doggie.”
“Okay, you know what Lord Thadus wishes, so what game are you playing with Lord Zarus?”
